 Background:
Every fall, a group composed of all secondary Principals, high school Head Counselors, secondary Curriculum and Instruction Deans, special education services, and secondary Ed Services and Student Services staff meet to review all proposed new courses for the following school year. This group, referred to as Curriculum Council, completes two reads of each proposed course. The group discusses course content, financial obligation, master schedule and FTE implications. Curriculum Council meets biweekly, starting the second week of school and ending in October. All courses approved through Curriculum Council are brought forward to the Board of Trustees for final approval. This year we revised our course application to align to UC, CSU and CTE standards and guidelines and developed an SOP for the sites to utilize when going through the new course submission process.
 Rationale:
Approval of the proposed courses will allow MUSD access to more rigorous courses at the junior and senior level to be more competitive for college.  The Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway courses in Engineering have been revised and are replacing our existing Project Lead the Way Courses. Both the Engineering and Plant Science courses are replacing courses in existing pathways to further expand student opportunities in regards to A-G. The two new Transportation courses are the concentrator level courses in our new pathways at Madera High School. These courses put us on track to start the accreditation process for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for students in these pathways. All new CTE courses were vetted and approved through pathway advisory committees to make sure they meet the needs of our local labor force.
