Ratification to Accept Grant Award Letter for Grant Number 118896, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals ("KFH"), managed by the KFH Northern California Community Benefit Programs Division, to support the MUSD Physical Education Students P.L.A.Y. at Home Program.

 Background:
Kaiser Permanente has a 70-year history and their mission includes improving the health of the communities they serve. As a nonprofit integrated healthcare delivery organization, they make investments in our communities. They believe in supporting organizations like ours, that make a difference in people's lives.
 Rationale:

This Grant must be used for the project identified in the Grant Award Letter, as described in the Grantee's proposal and related correspondence, and may not be expended for any other purposes without KFH's prior approval. If the Grant is intended to support a specific project or to provide general support for a specific period, any portion of the Grant unexpended at the completion of the project at the end of the period shall be returned immediately to KFH, unless otherwise agreed by KFH in writing. Grantee may not expend any Grant funds for any purpose that is not charitable or educational, for any political or lobbying activity, or for any purpose other than one specified in Section 170(c)(2)(b) of the Code. Grantee must obtain prior written approval from KFH for changes to budgetary allocations that amount to 10% or more of the total budget of the Grant award or for changes to the Grant period.

 

The M.U.S.D. P.E. Department will lead the "M.U.S.D. Students P.L.A.Y. at Home" project while utilizing approved curriculums, with 9,450 M.U.S.D. elementary students. P.L.A.Y. stands for Participate, Learn, and Actively Engage with a "Yes" Mindset. The "Yes" Mindset requires a person to demonstrate a positive coachable behavior with an intention to constantly learn, overcome obstacles, and grow. Therefore, elementary P.E. students will have the opportunity to P.L.A.Y. at home via the use of jump ropes, speed stacks, soft-touch balls, bean bags, and juggling scarves throughout their non-traditional physical education experiences in response to the pandemic.

Equipment to be purchased in order to support K-8 schools with project implementation include the following items per each student.

  • 1 Speed Stacks Set
  • 1 Bean Bag
  • 3 Juggling Scarves
  • 1 Small Ball
  • 1 Jump Rope
 Fiscal Impact:  

A grant in the amount of $25,000.00 awarded to the Madera Unified School District Physical Education Program.

This items fulfills/complies with Board Policy through the following ways:

The Governing Board recognizes the positive benefits of physical activity on student health and academic achievement. The district shall provide all students the opportunity to be physically active on a regular basis through high-quality physical education instruction and may provide additional opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day. The district's physical education and activity programs shall support the district's coordinated student wellness program and encourage students' lifelong fitness.

The district's physical education program shall provide a developmentally appropriate sequence of instruction aligned with the state's model content standards and curriculum framework.

The overall course of study for grades 9-12 shall include the effects of physical activity upon dynamic health, the mechanics of body movement, aquatics, gymnastics and tumbling, individual and dual sports, rhythms and dance, team sports, and combatives. (Education Code 33352; 5 CCR 10060)

 

The Board shall approve the courses in grades 9-12 for which physical education credit may be granted.

The district's physical education program shall engage students in moderate to vigorous physical activity, as defined in the accompanying administrative regulation, for at least 50 percent of class or session time. The Superintendent or designee shall develop strategies to monitor the amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity that takes place in the physical education instructional program.

 

The Superintendent or designee shall ensure that the district's program provides students with equal opportunities for instruction and participation regardless of gender in accordance with law.

 Superintendent's Recommendation to the MUSD Governing Board of Trustees:
The Superintendent recommends the Board to Accept Kaiser Grant Number 118896. The Purpose of the funds is to support the MUSD Physical Education STUDENTS P.L.A.Y. at Home.
